Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4

  1. Insert the Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4 CD 1 to boot up the server.

  2. In real-world server environment, Linux X-Windows interface such as Gnome or KDE are not installed. The server runs only in console mode, and mouse is not required.

  3. At the boot: prompt, type linux text.

  4. Skip Media Test if you are sure the installation CD is in good condition.

  5. Select language English.

  6. Keyboard configuration. Select US.

  7. Mouse configuration. Use None – None.

  8. Partition configuration. To get an estimation of the size of partitions for swap and /boot based on current hardware specs, choose Autopartition. Write down the size of swap and /boot and press back button to continue with Disk Druid.

  9. Assuming we have a hard disk of 80GB, the following partitions will be created:

    /boot 100MB ext3 swap 1GB / 25GB ext3 /home 30GB ext3 (To keep all user files) /file 20GB ext3 (For backup purposes)
  10. Boot Loader Configuration, Use GRUB Boot Loader

  11. Network Configuration (If network card driver found).

    Unselect Configure using DHCP Select Activate on boot IP Address : < IP > Netmask : < Netmask_IP>
  12. Miscellaneous Network Settings

    Gateway : < Gateway_IP> Primary DNS IP : < Primary_DNS_IP > Secondary DNS IP : < Secondary_DNS_IP > Tertiary DNS : < Tertiary_DNS_IP>
  13. Hostname Configuration

    Unselect automatically via DHCP Select manually: localhost Preferably, please setup a subdomain as hostname, Eg. fire.ywso.com, where it points to a fixed IP.
  14. Firewall Configuration (If network card driver found).

    Enable Firewall > Customize
  15. Customize Firewall Configuration

    Allow incoming : [Yes] SSH : [Yes] HTTP, HTTPS : [Yes] FTP : [Yes] SMTP
  16. Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux)

    Select Disabled
  17. Language Support – English (USA)

  18. Time Zone Selection – Kuala Lumpur

  19. Root Password, we use 12345678 during post installation. Remember to change it later when server goes live.

  20. Select Customize software selection. Install the following components:

    1. X Windows System (File Server only)
    2. GNOME Desktop Environment (File Server only)
    3. Editors
    4. Graphical Internet (File Server only)
    5. Text-based Internet
    6. Server Configuration Tools
    7. Web Server
    8. Mail Server
    9. Windows File Server (File Server only)
    10. FTP Server
    11. MySQL Database
    12. Network Server (File Server only)
    13. Development Tools
    14. Kernel Development
    15. Administration Tools
    16. System Tools
    17. Printing Support (File Server only)
  21. A complete log of your installation will be in /root/install.log after rebooting your system.

  22. You will be prompted to insert CD 2, 3 and 4 to complete the installation. Restart the server after the installation done.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 3

  1. Insert the Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 3 CD 1 to boot up the server.

  2. In real-world server environment, Linux X-Windows interface such as Gnome or KDE are not installed. The server runs only in console mode, and mouse is not required.

  4. Select language English.

  5. Keyboard configuration. Select US.

  6. Mouse configuration. Use None – None.

    Enable Firewall > Customize Trusted Devices : [No] eth0 : [No] eth1 Allow incoming : [Yes] SSH : [No ] Telnet : [Yes] WWW (HTTP) : [Yes] Mail (SMTP) : [Yes] FTP : Other ports – 443:tcp
  12. Language Support – English (USA)

  13. Time Zone Selection – Kuala Lumpur

  14. Root Password

  15. Select Customize software selection. Install the following components:

    1. Editors
    2. Text-based Internet
    3. Server Configuration Tools
    4. Web Server
    5. Mail Server
    6. FTP Server
    7. MySQL Database
    8. Development Tools
    9. Kernel Development
    10. Administration Tools
    11. System Tools
  16. A complete log of your installation will be in /root/install.log after rebooting your system.
