When you sign up Google Apps, Google direct you to their domain name partner, eNom.

My customer has a domain name which is expired many months ago. Instead of releasing it to the public, what this eNom do is to renew it without my customer’s notice.

This lock the domain name with them. They are telling my customer to pay a redemption fee to get back the domain name.

1. As a Registrar, eNom should have released the domain name to the public instead of renewing it for evil motives.

2. They never mention in their email that they have renewed the domain name for another year. There are no such thing as redemption but only dirty trick of evilly holding you for ransom.

Greetings Pin,

The domain Blackheadnomore.com is still within the redemption period.

Here is an explanation of the expiration and redemption process. While there are no guarantees, currently there is a 29-day grace period during which time you can renew the domain at your regular rate. 19 days of which is provided by Google and 10 by eNom, Inc. The grace periods for this domain has lapsed. After that the domain may be auctioned, dropped or go into an extended redemption status.

This domain is now in an extended redemption period (ERGP) and may remain in the account for up to 90 days after the renewal grace period has lapsed. You can renew and recover the domain name for $160 while in this status.

After the 90-day ERGP lapses, the original registrant has relinquished all rights and use of the domain name. The name will be deleted from the account, and the previous registrant data will be removed from the whois. eNom may auction, delete or dispose of the name as we see fit. You will not have an opportunity to recover the domain once the 90-day ERGP timeframe has lapsed.

For more complete details, please refer to the Registration Agreement under the Expired Domains section. While this is a bit lengthy, it does provide more details about the process. http://www.enom.com/terms/agreement.asp

If the registrant does not wish to pay the redemption fee, please consider an alternate spelling of the domain, or a different extension (such as .biz or .info) to register at this time. Or add the domain to your list of backorders for the future at: www.NameJet.com

I hope this helps explain the process and options available to you.

Regards,

It is a requirement for a Registrant to appoint an Administrator to manage the domain name on behalf. Registrant has the right to appoint new Administrator anytime. In all cases, domain name ownership belongs to the Registrant, not Administrator!

The name ‘Administrator’ clearly defines the role of an Administrator. They are the person who manage the domain name, not the person who owns it. Sometimes. Registrant and Administrator can be the same person too.

Registrant grants the access to Administrator to manage the domain name. When there is a dispute between Registrant and Administrator, what could have happened?

Administrator refuses to return the access!

In this case, Registrant can go direct to the domain name service provider to get their help to appoint a new Administrator.

Generally, domain name service provider will request for proof of payment or renewal, or other supporting documents such as company registration, ID Card, passport, driver license. This is to prove that the Registrant is the rightful owner of the domain name.

Surprisingly, not every domain name service provider uphold this!

My customer decided to appoint a new administrator because the current one is not active! I am acting on my customer to deal with Sea Chen from MyExHost.com. MyExHost is the company who provide the registration of domain name to my customer.

Disappointingly, MyExHost insisted that the request must be sent out from the email address which is no longer active.

Through MyExHost is a domain name service provider, but they have totally no ideas of how the whole domain name ownership goes. Yes, I would really like to say Never register your domain name with MyExHost.com. I know this is harsh, but only after you have repeated explaining the whole concept to Sea Chen and he do not want to listen!

I doubt what is the criteria of signing up as domain name service provider!

Well, this will not stop us to claim back the domain name. We bypass MyExHost and talk directly to their Registrar, OnlineNic. MyExHost is the domain name reseller of OnlineNic.

Within a day, Online replied. Like what we have mentioned, OnlineNic requesting for the proof of ownership which we can provide! The case can be solved soon!

This is an example of how WHOIS presents Registrant and Administrator. I take webistesolution.com as an example.

WHOIS result for websitesolution.com

MyExHost is now My Ex’ed Host

Yet, many domain name owners are not aware of this. You don’t want to end up like what is happening to sex.com domain name dispute which causes 6 years to settle in a court.

This is one of the email sample I have wrote to MyNIC. Might be of useful to you if you are writing one to them, use this as the template.

Hi there,

I am writing on behalf of Infinity to deal with their domain name dispute issues. A company called Innova System Integration had been helping my client Infinity Logistic and Transport Sdn Bhd to register the domain name infinity.com.my in year 2003. Unfortunately, the incorrect Admin Contact and Registrant information was used during the registration.

My client’s proof of conduct including using this domain name as their official website address and email, as well as paying for the renewal should be more than enough to show that they are the rightful owners of this domain name, instead of Innova System Integration or Goh Wah Loon, as stated in the WHOIS.

It is in a deadlock now because the Admin Contact can not be reached. Retrieving admin ID and password is not possible too.

Pls advise how we this can be resolved, thank you.

MyNIC has appointed resellers to manage the registration, billing and renewal of their domain name. MyNIC is no longer dealing directly with end users. Back to the question, what is the pre-requisite to become a MyNIC reseller?

From http://www.domainregistry.my/faq.php?id=65

What do Resellers do?

Resellers will bring you through all the steps of registration, including collecting payments. They also offer non-.my DOMAIN REGISTRY-related domain name services such as name hosting and data services. Sometimes, they bundle the registration service with their other products and/or services. Make sure all invoices and bills clearly state .my DOMAIN REGISTRY charges, distinct from any charges the Reseller may impose for other services you purchase from them. .my DOMAIN REGISTRY is not responsible for these other services.

In short, each reseller needs to commit to certain number of domain name registration per month. Well, meeting the target is one thing, but how many of them are reliable?

Dealing with domain name business is not a short term hit and run business. Yet, many domain name service providers never seems to get this right. Check out posts I have written earlier Domain Name Ownership and What is Your Rights as Domain Owner?. The two posts are inspired by my bad encounters with IPXcess and KLHost.

Both of them are ignoring messages regarding domain name registrar transfer despite many attempts to contact them. I have tried both email and contact us form in their website, no one reply me at all. Yet, it is too easy for them to put the word ‘leading of…’. Shame on them!

Do you know how to register for a car plate number? Or getting your first insurance policy without a insurance agent? Well, there are many things that we believe it is way too complicated and we usually leave it to others, and have them get it done for us.

This happens to domain name as well. Usually, this was done by web developers or your web & email hosting service providers. Therefore few things that you need to know for the very least!

1. Domain name ownership. How do you know if a domain name was registered under your name? Registration information of a domain name are freely available to the public through WHOIS. For all .my domain name owner, please use MyNIC’s WHOIS for most updated information. For other domain name such as .com, you can try DNS Stuff’s WHOIS. Enter your domain name and search. From the WHOIS result, make sure you name or company name are in the Administrator / Admin Contact section. You must make sure you can access to the email address listed under the Administrator section too!

2. Cost of registration. Generally speaking, .com cost around RM55 a year, while .com.my cost around RM100 a year. Your agent get commissions from the Registrar and their price to you should not exceed the said figures.

3. What is DNS address? When register any domain name, one need to provide the DNS address to complete the registration. Well, it is okey if you’re not sure what is DNS, and your agents can handle this for you. This does not affect ownership. It is more on resolving or pointing (layman terms) of your domain name to specific IP address.

4. Renewal. Well, a responsible agents should always remind you one month before the domain name expires. If you are those last minutes person, chances you can are safe with those slow registrar such as MyNIC (they allow at least 2 weeks before releasing your domain name to the public). While those strict one, will put you under retention and you may need to pay extra to unlock.

5. What documents do I need? Well, a .com domain name do not need any. Anyway, if you are registering a country-based domain name such as .com.my or .com.sg, you need ROC in most case. Well, the rules are continuously reviewed (to a more loosen process, for sure). Domain name is a lucrative business for all registrar, they want your business :)

If you need some suggestion and hints of choosing a good name for your online business:
It’s never too late to change a bad name
Technically speaking, website address is used to point to an IP. To direct visitors typing the URL to the correct web server located on different IP. You can view both URL as two different address, pointing to same IP.

In most case, you should define a master one, which I suggest to be the one with www. Then, point the one without to the main one using redirect 301, which is much friendly for search engines.

According to MyNIC, a Technical Contact can be defined as:

This is the person who maintains the domain name’s primary name server, secondary name server, resolver software and the domain name database files. This person keeps the name server running. He/she also answers all queries regarding technical matters, and interacts with technical people in other domains to solve problems affecting the domain name. Only the contact person listed in your Registration form will receive e-mail notification from MYNIC when the registration is completed

Perhaps, some are confused. The Technical Contact here doesn’t mean that someone who happen to be the technical staff in your company. One should at least understand how DNS works and able to manage all the Zone file when assigned as a Technical Contact.

It is important to find someone who is reliable and those who is not on hit-and-running business. The support from the person listed in the Technical Contact is important. It has lot to do with your website and email services!

One of my client received an email from someone called Stan Nonin. Apparently, this new phishing works by telling by client that his domain will expire soon next month. Actual fact is, the domain name is actually expiring next year. Stan then made an offer to buy over the domain name.

To verify the actual date of your domain name expiring date, you can use this Free WHOIS tool from DNSStuff.com. Verify now!

If you're still not sure, leave it as comment here and I will try to verify for you and help!

My first domain is it-lodge.com, registered on 1999. Perhaps, I have also registered websitesolution.com.my and could be even earlier, but it was all done and managed by Asia Pacific Net.

One thing I'm sure - PageRank (PR) has really nothing to do with how long a domain name was registered. The website it-lodge.com has PR1 because it was not updated for long.

The challenge of getting it-lodge.com done, mainly because I was required to setup the website and all its pointing to our own web server. It was a Xitami server installed in a Windows platform, sitting on a HP server.

It was all new to me. I used a Public DNS Service called Granite Canyon (I'm happy that I can remember the name still). There are no nice interface for me to edit the zone file in their DNS server. It was all done manually from setting A to MX records.

Then, comes the Xitami server that never seems to work. I configured it in blind. Lucky, the whole projects was funded under the research projects by my mentor, Dr. Lee Yee Loon. He is the head of research of UTHN. It was how I managed to learn all this, with his support.

The IT-Lodge project meant to be a Research Portal to bridge researchers and industrial people. We don't have Blog those days. But, Dr. Lee's ideas of sharing inspiring us until today.
